Supreme Court Gets 4 New Judges- Find Out Who They Are?

Supreme Court collegium, which is headed by Chief Justice of India TS Thakur, today approved elevation of four new judges. Out of these four judges, three are existing Chief Justices of Allahabad High Court, Madhya Pradesh High Court and Kerala High Court; while one is a senior advocate and former Additional Solicitor General of India.

As per sources, these names have reached the Ministry of Law and Justice; and they are right now processing the files to complete the procedure.

With these new appointments, the numbers of judges have increased to 28.

Here is a brief profile of these 4 new judges:

A M Khanwikar, Chief Justice Madhya Pradesh High Court

Khanwilkar

Born on July 30th, 1957, A M Khanwikar was enrolled as Advocate on February 10, 1982 & appointed as The Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh on November 24th, 2013.

He practiced on Civil, Criminal and Constitutional sides before the Subordinate Courts, Tribunals and High Court of Judicature at Bombay on the Appellate side and Original side. He has practiced exclusively in the Supreme Court of India from July, 1984.

On March 29, 2000, he was appointed as Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court and confirmed as permanent Judge on April 8, 2002.

On 4th April, 2013, he was appointed as Chief Justice of the High court of Himachal Pradesh.

Since November 24th, 2013, he is working as The Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh

D.Y. Chandrachud, Chief Justice Allahabad High Court

Born on November 11th, 1959, Justice D.Y. Chandrachud joined Allahabad High Court on October 31st, 2013 and is scheduled to retire on November 10th, 2021.

He graduated from St. Stephen’s college, Delhi in 1979 and then completed LL.B. from Delhi University in 1982. In 1983, he completed LL.M. from Harvard University and Doctor of Juridical Sciences (SJD) Harvard in 1986.

Justice Chandrachud was appointed as Addl. Solicitor General of India (1998-2000) and designated as Senior Advocate in 1998.

He has appeared in several important cases involving PIL, Rights of Bonded Women Workers, Rights of HIV Positive Workers in the Work place, Contract Labour and Rights of Religious and Linguistic Minorities.

Besides, he has appeared on behalf of several public bodies including RBI, Port Trusts, Municipal Corporations and Universities.

Justice Chandrachud has also taught International Law at Oklahoma University, USA in 1983 and was Visiting Professor. Comparative Constitutional Law at University of Bombay (1988-1997).

On Mar 29, 2000, he was appointed as Additional Judge of High Court of Bombay and on Oct 31, 2013, he took oath as Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court.

Ashok Bhushan, Chief Justice Kerala High Court

Born on 5th July, 1956 in Jaunpur (district), Uttar Pradesh to Late Shri Chandrama Prasad Srivastava and Smt. Kalavathi Srivasthava, Justice Ashok Bhushan graduated in Arts in the year 1975 & obtained Law Degree in Ist Division from the Allahabad University in the year 1979.

Justice Ashok enrolled as an Advocate with the Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh on 6th April, 1979; thereafter, started practice on Civil and Original side at Allahabad High Court till the elevation to the Bench.

Afterwards, he started working as Standing Counsel of Allahabad University, State Mineral Development Corporation Limited and several Municipal Boards, Banks & Education Institutions. On 24th April, 2001, he was elected as Senior Vice – President of the Allahabad High court Bar Association and then elevated as permanent Judge of the Allahabad High court.

Besides, he has also served as Chairman, Higher Judicial Service Committee and headed several other committees.

Justice Ashok was sworn in as Judge of the High Court of Kerala on 10-07-2014, and took charge as Acting Chief Justice on 01-08-2014.

On March 26th, 2015, he was sworn in as Chief Justice of Kerala.

L.Nageswara Rao, Sr Adv & ex ASG

Nageswara Rao

Nageswara Rao was born on September 2nd, 1956. He is a Senior advocate and former Additional Solicitor General of India. He primarily practices at the Supreme Court of India and was counsel for Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in a disproportionate assets case. Right now, he is representing Tamil Nadu in their objection against NEET exam suggested by MCI.

Mr. Rao would be the seventh person in India’s legal history to be directly appointed to the Supreme Court.

He served as an ASG from August 8, 2003 till his resignation in 2004, from August,2013 to May,2014 and from June 7 to December 15, 2014.

He was also a member of the Supreme Court-appointed Mudgal Committee headed by Justice Mukul Mudgal and comprising senior advocate and former cricket umpire Nilay Dutta as the other member.

The committee is tasked with conducting an independent inquiry into allegations of corruption, betting and spot-fixing in Indian Premier League matches.
