AIADMK symbol fight: Lawyers absent, petitioners seek adjournment

The Delhi High Court on Thursday (April 12) had to adjourn a matter related to the dispute between the AIADMK factions over the “Two Leaves symbol”. The matter comes up again on May 17.

When the matter came up for hearing before the bench of Justices G S Sistani and M D Sangita Dhingra Sehgal, the court questioned why it can’t hear the matter today. The petitioners said that senior counsels Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Kapil Sibal for the Sasikala-Dhinakaran faction cannot appear today in the matter.

Yesterday, senior advocate Singhvi had mentioned the matter before Chief Justice on behalf of the Sasikala-Dhinakaran led faction of the AIADMK over their claim on the “two leaves” symbol.

On March 9 the Delhi high Court directed the Election Commission to allot the pressure cooker symbol and a suitable name for the Dhinakaran faction. TTV Dhinakaran approached the court seeking permission to use a temporary name and party symbol for elections.

This is a challenge that has gone to the Supreme Court. At the top court a bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice A M Khanwilkar had asked Delhi High Court Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal to set up a two-judge bench to decide the main dispute between the two AIADMK factions over their rival claims on the party and its ‘two leaves’ symbol by April-end.

One faction is led by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister E K Palaniswamy and the other by Dhinakaran.
