The Centre is planning to introduce legislation to end the instant triple talaq in the upcoming Winter Session of Parliament.
A Union minister was quoted as saying: “We are likely to bring a legislation to provide shield and shelter to the victims suffering at the hands of their devious husbands.”
A ministerial committee has been constituted to draft the legislation, sources quoted as saying.
The move comes more than two months after the apex court revoked the contentious practice of instant triple talaq. While annulling the instant triple talaq the Supreme Court had set the timeframe of six months for the Centre to frame a law to end it.
The Centre had sought annulment of instant triple talaq, calling it “unconstitutional” and discriminatory. The Centre had given the grounds that instant triple talaq has been banned in Muslim countries including Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.
