Some years ago, the Delhi government introduced low-floor buses, suited for the physically challenged. The move earned kudos for the state government.
However, recently the Delhi government has decided to purchase 2,000 standard floor buses ignoring the needs of the physically challenged. This move has been challenged in the Delhi High Court. Hearing the petition on Wednesday (November 1), the Delhi High Court issued a notice to the Delhi government.
The PIL under Article 226 of the Constitution seeks an order of mandamus asking for an explanation behind the rationale to procure non-disabled friendly public transport standard floor buses.
The petition has been filed by disability rights activist Nipun Kumar Malhotra.
