Delhi HC tells Principal Secretary, Delhi govt to apprise it about authorized speed breakers in the city

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday (May 23) directed Principal Secretary, GNCTD to file an affidavit on the authorized speed breakers in New Delhi and whether the details regarding authorization of the speed breakers have been put on the website or not. The court said that if Principal Secretary fails to do it then it will initiate contempt proceedings against him.

During today’s hearing, the bench of Justices S Ravindra Bhat and A K Chawla was informed by the respondent that there were 589 authorised speed breakers but they have yet to procure certificate authorizing them from the authorities.

To which the bench said if the certificate are not there and not put up on the website, they can’t be regarded as authorized.

The bench was hearing the plea raising concerns about the illegal and unauthorised speed breakers in New Delhi.

The petitioner showed the pictures of Supreme Court and Delhi High Court highlighting the existence of speed breakers and how it could prove fatal saying that six months have been passed and no action have been taken by the authorities to remove them.

“No coercive actions have been taken against the authorities and that is why they are not doing their duty. All are cognizable offence and I am duty bound to bring it to light under Section 39 of the CrPC,” the petitioner said.

To which the respondents said that they have carried out the joint inspection with the police to check the roads and found out that there were 589 unauthorized speed breakers.
