Violence over the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019, reached South Delhi today with police clashed with students and residents of the Jamia Nagar area protesting against the recently enacted Act.
According to reports, residents of Sarai Julema in the Jamia Nagar locality clashed with police. Students of Jamia Milia University also clashed with cops. Police reportedly entered the campus after students pelted stones at them from inside the campus. But, Waseem Ahmed Khan, Chief Proctor, Jamia Millia Islamia University said, “Police have entered the campus by force, no permission was given. Our staff and students are being beaten up and forced to leave the campus.”
In an official statement, the university reiterated that the protest was not organised by students of Jamia Mllia. “The violent incidents occurred during the protest organised by the people of nearby areas and not by JMI students,” it said.
Delhi Metro authorities reportedly have issued a statement which said that “entry and exit gates of Sukhev Vihar and Gate No. 3 of Ashram Metro stations” have been closed. Vishwavidyalaya and GTB Nagar metro stations have also been closed.
