The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Tuesday (March 13) ruled that in the upcoming Bar Council of Delhi (BCD) elections only eco-friendly materials would be used for canvassing.
The bench, headed by Justice Jawed Rahim, was hearing the petition pertaining to the use of paper, flyers and hoarding for canvassing in the upcoming BCD elections.
During today’s hearing, the counsel appearing for the BCD said that elections are being held as per the directions of the Delhi High Court by referring to the order of this court regarding usage of posters in the election. The counsel also told the bench that it has also complied with the model code of conduct stipulated by Delhi High Court on March 8, 2018 and through this code the grievances of the applicant has been addressed.
The applicant’s counsel countered it by saying: “My only prayer to the bench is to direct BCD to include clause regarding use of eco-friendly materials for canvassing of election.”
The bench disposed of the matter with the following directions:
- BCD shall ensure strict compliance of the moral code of conduct by every contesting candidate.
- BCD will issue additional directions to candidate especially using eco-friendly materials for canvassing
- However, at least for future BCD can add clause regarding use of eco-friendly material for canvassing.
- Contesting candidates are under the obligation to abide by the order passed by the Delhi High Court.
