SC to states: Implement 2016 Act on the rights of persons with disabilities

The Supreme Court on Thursday (January 25) granted certain states three months time to comply with a 2016 Act pertaining to rights of persons with disabilities.

The bench comprising of Justices Arun Mishra and Justice S Abdul Nazeer was informed on Thursday that five states, Haryana, UP, Uttarakhand, Karnataka and Lakshadweep have not complied with 2016 Act.

The bench was hearing the plea from Justice Sunanda Bhandare Foundation seeking direction to the Central government and all states to implement the 2016 Act.

The 2016 Act came into effect after Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act, 1995 was amended.

The bench also directed the counsel of states to file the affidavit on the next date showing the compliance of orders and directions of the court.
