The apex court on Monday (July 2) directed the Centre to provide security to state coordinator engaged in the National Register of Citizens (NRC) update process as well as his family members. Additionally, the court also directed the Chief Secretary, Assam and DGP to ascertain the security procedures and file status report within seven days.

The bench comprising Justices Ranjan Gogoi and R Banumathi gave the directions on the plea alleging misappropriation of atleast Rs 177 crore in the NRC update process.

During today’s hearing, the bench was informed that the report by the state coordinator has been filed and that the final draft will be published by July 30.

To which the bench asked the state coordinator if he wanted security to execute the work entrusted upon him by the court effectively and efficiently.
