Will he? Won’t he? The suspense on Kanhaiya Kumar’s bail plea remains as the Delhi High Court reserved the order till March 2.
The court remained a fortress like his previous hearings, and heavy security was deployed in and around the court premises.
As it happened during the earlier hearings, the Delhi Police was using special handicams to record movement of persons outside the court room.
The court had strictly barred the entry of media and outsiders during the proceedings.
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal who appeared on behalf of Kanhaiya, argued that there is no case of sedition against him. On the other hand, Delhi Police opposed the bail saying that he was leading the protest held on February 9. The state counsel also argued that the police had more incriminating evidence against Kanhaiya and the video footage was just a corroborative proof.
Meanwhile, the Chief Justice bench of Delhi High Court today dismissed a PIL filed against Delhi Police chief B S Bassi, alleging that the top cop was affecting fair trial in the Kanhaiya Kumar case.
The bench of Chief Justice Rohini and Justice Jayantnath said that such petitions are filed to garner publicity, and are a burden for courts.
The PIL had also stated that Bassi had earlier made the statement that Delhi Police will not oppose Kanhaiya’s bail application.
Incidentally, it was today that Bassi retired after serving as Delhi Police commissioner for three years. he will be succeeded by Alok Verma.
Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court reserved the order on bail plea of JNU students’ union president Kanhaiya Kumar, who has been charged with sedition.
