The Supreme Court on Monday (June 4) agreed to hear a plea filed by the relatives of the deceased in Thoothukkudi (Tuticorin) firing, wanting a doctor of their choice on the board of doctors which is to conduct post-mortem of the deceased. The top court, however, declined a plea for an urgent hearing.

The court said that it will take up the matter after vacations.

In the same incident, a PIL had been filed in the apex court earlier seeking a CBI probe into the deaths by registering an FIR against the Collector, Superintendent of Police and other police officials.

It is to be noted that 13 people were killed in police firing during protests against the continued functioning of the Sterlite copper smelter plant in Thoothukkudi after which the Tamil Nadu government had issued order to shut down the plant.
