The Modi government had recently given the go-ahead to a law ministry proposal suggesting changing the names of the Bombay and Madras high courts. Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad had later indicated that the name of the Calcutta High Court too will be changed.
However, the Calcutta High Court has outrightly rejected the proposal of the central government. This is revealed in a letter, dated July 14, 2016, from the Registrar General of the high court addressed to the President, Incorporated Law Society, Calcutta High Court.
The letter informs that the Full Court of the Calcutta High Court had unanimously decided that the high court’s name should not be changed considering the hallowed history and tradition associated with it. It also informs that the decision has been communicated to the Ministry of Law and Justice, Government of India.
As of now, there is no central law to deal with the change in names of high courts.
