Anti CAA protests: Bail plea of 15 people arrested in Daryaganj violence rejected

A Tis Hazari Court in Delhi has rejected the bail plea of 15 people who were arrested for the violence in Daryaganj during a protest march against the Citizenship Amendment Act recently. The court will be hearing the matter next on January 7.

A car was set on fire outside the office of Deputy Commissioner of Police in Daryaganj after violence broke out in the area on December 20 when a group of agitating demonstrators resorted to stone-pelting after police tried to forcefully evict them.

The Delhi Police had arrested 15 people and detained 40 on December 20 after police and protesters clashed in the area. All the 15 accused were then sent to 14-days judicial custody.

A Delhi court last week dismissed the bail plea of all the arrested people in connection with anti-CAA protests in that area.

Senior Advocate Rebecca John, appearing on behalf of them, told the court that over 18 people were taken into custody in connection with the case. John stated that the accused had gone for Friday prayers at Jama Masjid and had no role in the violence.

John urged the magistrate to grant bail, saying many minors were detained and let off. But the magistrate sent the accused to 14-day judicial custody after rejecting their bail application.

During the course of hearing on the bail petition today, the Additional Public Persecutor (APP) said that the accused hatched a “criminal conspiracy” and in its pursuance, a car was put to fire, stones were pelted, barricades were broken and police officers were assaulted.

Meanwhile, a Delhi court adjourned the bail plea of 10 accused in Seemapuri violence case. The matter will be heard on December 31. The court has sought medical reports of injured policemen from the Investigation officer.
