The Union of India on Wednesday notified the appointment of Justice HS Thangkhiew as Acting Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court.
On November 2, following the retirement of Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee, Justice Thangkhiew will take over as the Chief Justice of the High Court.
As per a notification issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice, in exercise of the power conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution of India, the President was pleased to appoint Justice Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew, Judge of the Meghalaya High Court, to perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice of that High Court with effect from November 2, 2023, consequent upon the retirement of Justice Sanjib Banerjee, Chief Justice, Meghalaya High Court on November 1, 2023.
Justice Thangkhiew took oath as a judge of Meghalaya High Court on November 19, 2018. He has previously served as Acting Chief Justice of the High Court in a short stint back in November 2019.
After attaining his LL.B. Degree from Delhi University in 1990, he enrolled as an Advocate with the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh in 1990-1991.
He was designated Senior Advocate by the Gauhati High Court in August 2010.
Justice Banerjee, who retires today, was appointed as a judge of Calcutta High Court in 2006. He was appointed as Chief Justice of the Madras High Court in January 2021 before his transfer to Meghalaya High Court in November 2021.
