The appointment of Justice Sonia G Gokani as the Chief Justice of a Gujarat High court was notified by the Central Government on Sunday.
The website of the ministry of Law and Justice has published a notification to this effect.
The notification issued, mentions that with respect to the powers conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President of India is pleased to appoint Ms. Justice Sonia Giridhar Gokani, the Judge of the Gujarat High Court.
As per the notification the appointment of the Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court, is with effect from the date she assumes charge of her office.
The name of Justice Gokani was recommended for appointment by the Supreme Court collegium on February 8.
It is important to note that she will be serving as Chief Justice only for a fortnight, as she retires on February 25.
The Government on February 10, had notified the appointment of Justice Gokani as Acting Chief Justice, after the Chief justice Aravind Kumar was chosen as the judge of Supreme Court.
After Justice Gokhani takes the charge of office of Chief Justice, she will become the first woman judge to helm affairs at the Gujarat High Court in 63 years of its existence.
At present,Justice Gokani is the senior most judge of the Gujarat High Court. She was appointed judge on February 17, 2011 and is due to demit office on February 25, 2023. Justice Gokani is drawn from the judicial service of the State of Gujarat.
