Assam Children Out of NRC Will Not Be Sent To Detention Camps: Centre To Supreme Court

Final NRC of State of Assam has been published today. It is called the Supplementary List of Inclusions and Exclusions as a draft list was already published last year. Supreme Court had earlier this month directed the State to publish the final list family-wise by August 31st online and the same to include the list of exclusions.

Now people can view the results for those who submitted a claim after not being included in the complete draft published on July 30, 2018, or excluded via the additional draft exclusions list published on June 26 this year, or had any objection filed against their inclusion. 41 lakh people who were earlier excluded, can now find out if they are declared citizens of India or foreigners. They can however appeal within 120 days in the Foreigner’ Tribunal.

Prateek Hajela, State Co-ordinator of the NRC has stated that “19,06,657 persons, including those who did not submit their claims” have been excluded in the final list.

The first National Register of Citizens (NRC) was prepared in 1951, but the update process did not continue. The Assam Accord 1985 signed between the All Assam Student Union and then-PM Rajiv Gandhi ended a six-year long agitation to revive the process to curb illegal immigration from Bangladesh.

Supreme Court has closely monitored the update process since 2013.

The list can be accessed online at www.nrcassam.nic.in as well as directly at www.thefinalnrc.com besides the 2500 NRC service centres, 157 zonal offices and 33 District Deputy Commissioner offices in the state.

Prior to the publication, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal issued an advisory yesterday to the public not to panic.
