BCI Issues Administrative Order, Says “No Coats Or Gowns Are Required To Be Worn By Advocates Amid COVID 19 Pandemic”

The Bar Council of India has issued an administrative order which says that no coats or gowns/robes are/is required to be worn by Advocates appearing before all Courts, Tribunals, Commissions and all other forums amid COVID 19 Pandemic.

The order states that the BCI had adopted the Resolution on May 13, after the Supreme Court has issued circular directing all advocates appearing before it to avoid wearing black coats and gowns.

The order states that the advocates at present may wear “Plain White Shirt/White Salwar Kameez/White Saree With Plain White Neck Band” while appearing before any Court or Tribunal throughout the Country.

It has been clarified that the directive will be operative till further orders and the Administrative Order is being issued as a precautionary measure to check the spread of Corona Virus (Covid-19) infection under the present situation.

The order will come into force with immediate effect until further orders of the Council.

The Supreme Court of India on May 13, considering the medical advice, as a precautionary measure to contain the spread of COVID-19 infection directed that the advocates may wear plain white shirts/ white-salwar-kameez/ white saree along with a plain white neckband during the hearings through virtual court system till medical exigencies exists.
