BJP Chief Amit Shah Is Home Minister in Modi 2.0. Rajnath Gets Defence, Nirmala is FM and Jaishankar Foreign Minister

Amit Shah is India’s new home minister  as Rajnath Singh made way for him to move to take charge of Defence,  accordinging to the portfolio allocation that was announced on Friday. Nirmala Sitharaman, India’a first lady Defence Minister is the new finance minister while former foreign secretary S Jaishankar, the surprise entrant into the cabinet has got the expected slot in the minister of external affairs.

The portfolios were announced barely 15 hours after Narendra Modi and his team of ministers were sworn in last evening in the forecourt of the Rasthrapathi Bhavan before over 8000 special invitees. As expected, Shah, a former home minister under Modi in the Gujarat government fills in the slot for the first time at the centre. The new council of ministers has 25 at the cabinet level, nine who were sworn in as Minister of State with Independent charge and another 24 are Ministers of State. Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri, a former diplomat who lost the elections, managed to retain his berth. Both he and the new foreign minister will have to enter Parliament within six months and boith probably would opt for the Rajya sabha route. The maximum number of ministers are from Uttar Pradesh which has nine ministers while states like West Bengal where the BJP had a spectacular showing winning 18 seats accounted for two ministers — Babul Supriyo and Debasree Chaudhuri. Kerala, where the BJP drew a blank is also represented in the council of ministers with V Muraleedharan, the Rajya Sabha MP from Maharashtra being given twin charges of MoS External Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs.
