An interesting case has landed in front of the Delhi High Court bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar. It is off a petition by Kush Kalra, who has contented that the state does not allow married women to go for Army training, while allowing married and unmarried men to attend the same. This was discriminatory in nature.

The counsel appearing on behalf of the respondent Union of India argued that this training period is just for 10 months and they cannot get married for that period. “We do not want to and cannot restrict someone from getting married.”

The applicant said that in India women get married at a very early age, and this provision clearly denies women a chance.

The bench asked: “If you allow married men and don’t allow married women it is discrimination in the face of it.”

Matter adjourned, to be listed on August 24.
