Central consumer protection oversight body notified

The new Consumer Protection Act is now in force. What consumers in India needed was an overall authority responsible for all oversight in this area. The promised body, the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA), was notified by the Centre on Saturday (July 25).

Provisions of Chapter III of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019 calls for such an authority. Those are the provisions under which the CCPA has been set up. It will be headquartered in New Delhi.

Within the oversight authority of the CCPA come matters pertaining to the violation of consumer rights, unfair trade practices, and false or misleading advertisements which are prejudicial to the public interest and consumers.

Several provision of the new Act give teeth to this body.
