The Union government has notified the elevation of five additional judges as permanent judges for the High Court of Madras and three for the Karnataka High Court.
A notification issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice on Tuesday said that in exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, the President of India, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, appointed Justice AA Nakkiran, Justice Nidumolu Mala, Justice S Sounthar, Sunder Mohan and Justice Kabali Kumaresh Babu as permanent judges of the Madras High Court.
On June 20, 2023, the Supreme Court Collegium had recommended elevation of these additional judges as permanent judges of the Madras High Court, after receiving a proposal for the same by the High Court Collegium.
The Collegium resolution said that both the Chief Minister and the Governor of Tamil Nadu have concurred with the recommendation.
The Central government further notified the elevation of two additional judges as permanent judges of the Karnataka High Court. It also extended the term of additional judge Justice Siddaiah Rachaiah for a period of one year.
On August 31, 2023, the Supreme Court Collegium had recommended the names of Justice Anant Ramanath Hegde and Justice Kannankuzhyil Sreedharan Hemalekha for appointment as Permanent Judges and for appointment of an Additional Judge for a fresh term of one year.
The recommendation followed the proposal by the High Court of Karnataka on May 30, 2023.
As per a resolution passed by the Collegium, both Chief Minister and the Governor of Karnataka have concurred with the above recommendation, stated Collegium resolution.
