CJI Chandrachud says he permits women law clerks to work from home during menstruation

Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud on Saturday spoke about being liberal and permitting women law clerks to work from home while they were experiencing health issues pertaining to menstruation.

Speaking during the 31st annual convocation of the National Law School of India University, Bengaluru, the CJI said that last year, four of his law clerks out of five were women.

He added that he understood it well that they have uneasy time during the monthly cycle for which he granted them work from home.

The CJI also added that they have provided sanitary napkins dispensers in female washrooms in the Supreme Court of India.

He further touched upon the dilemma faced by law graduates regarding the career path they have to choose.

He suggested that the students should not rush to decide on one particular avenue in law, and instead explore all possible avenues within the field.

Having decades of experience in the field of law, the CJI told the students that the life is long and a few years exploring the possibility and wonders of the law will not disadvantage them.

He added that each job gives skill which is transferable to another job. The CJI asked the future law fraternity to ponder over what they would leave the world behind with, may be a bit better.

He said that one should live in the present, adding that they always embrace the role with all thier heart.

He suggested the law students to live in the present and if they were dissatisfied, they always had the option of chosing another profession.

The CJI also threw in a word of caution asking the students to remain true to their roots.

He concluded his speech by stating that the higher they go, they should never kick the ladder that took them up in the journey of life.
