The Chief Justice of India UU Lalit has asked all the judges of Supreme Court to be present in the judges lounge today by 10.15 am so that he can hand over the letter recommending Justice DY Chandrachud as the next CJI in the presence of the fellow judges.
The Union Law Ministry had initiated the process for the appointment of the next CJI, asking the current CJI for recommending his successor.
As per the Memorandum of Procedure governing the appointment of members of the higher judiciary, the position of the Chief Justice of India should be given to the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court.
Justice D Y Chandrachud is the second most senior judge of the Supreme Court. If appointed, he will have a tenure of two years until November 10, 2024.
As per the process the Law Minister seeks the recommendation of the outgoing CJI for the appointment of the next CJI.
