The Delhi High Court today refused to hear a plea seeking the removal of police barricades from Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh.
The area has been at the centre of protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 and the proposal of National Register of Citizens (NRC) for nearly a month now.
The petition also demanded the protesters to be shifted to another location, citing traffic issues for daily commuters.
The barricades were placed to keep the agitation under control. The protests have been causing traffic jams in Shaheen Bagh and adjacent roads.
Many social activists have expressed solidarity with the protesters, who have camped on the Kalindi Kunj road, asking for the withdrawal of the CAA. The road has been closed by the police due to the protests, leading to heavy traffic congestion on Delhi-Noida Direct (DND) Flyway.
The meetings conducted by the police asking the demonstrators to call off or relocate the protests, were of no avail.
The nation has been witnessing widespread protests and violence against the recently passed Citizenship Act. Chief Justice of India SA Bobde yesterday said that he will be hearing the petitions challenging the constitutionality of the CAA “once violence stops”.
