On a PIL seeking decongestion of Mathura Road, the Delhi High Court bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar on May 31 ordered the Municipal Corporation to remove the unauthorized encroachments and submit a report.
The Jamia Arabia Nizamia Welfare Educational Society had taken this up at the High Court, against the DCP Traffic (Southern Range).
The counsel for petitioner said that in Mathura Road there are regular jams, because of illegal parking, illegal juice corners and an illegal guesthouse run by the society.
Justice Mittal asked the counsel for the municipal corporation to do their job and to be the local commissioner. At this the counsel said: “The problem is real and I have been fighting against illegal construction for a long time.”
Justice Mittal said: “I made a point when I was counsel that I never defended the wrong thing. The petitioner’s counsel says that let a traffic constable be appointed from Nizamuddin West to Mathura Road, so that traffic can be brought under control.”
