Election Commission announces polling schedule for 2019 Lok Sabha elections; to be held in 7 phases

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Sunday announced polling dates for the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections. The poll panel said that the elections will be held in seven phases.

“The 1st phase polling to be held on April 11, 2nd phase on April 18, 3rd phase on  April 23, 4th phase polling to be held on April 29, 5th phase polling on May 6, 6th phase polling on May 12, 7th phase polling on May 12. And Counting of all phases on May 23,” the ECI announced.

Addressing the mediapersons, Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora said that there will be approximately 10 lakh polling stations in 2019 Lok Sabha Elections as compared to nine lakh polling stations in 2014 and added “The Model Code of Conduct (MCC) comes into effect from today itself in the entire country. Any violation will be dealt with in the strictest manner”.

Phase 1 (April 11) – 91 constituencies in 20 states to go to polls

Phase 2 (April 18) – 97 constituencies in 13 states

Phase 3 (April 23)- 115 constituencies in 14 states

Phase 4 (April 29)- 71 constituencies in 9 states

Phase 5 (May 6)- 51 constituencies in 7 states

Phase 6 (May 12)- 59 constituencies in 7 states

Phase 7 (May 19) – 59 constituencies in 8 states

Assembly polls in Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha and Sikkim to be held with Lok Sabha polls

On the total electorate, Arora said: “Total electorate in this Lok Sabha elections will be 900 million, of which 15 million voters are in the 18-19 age group.”

Arora also announced that elections to legislative assemblies of Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Odisha will be held simultaneously with the Lok Sabha general elections.

Further elaborating on how many constituencies and states will be covered in phases, Arora said: “Phase 1 in 91 constituencies in 20 states, Phase 2 in 97 constituencies in 13 states, Phase 3 in 115 constituencies in 14 states, Phase 4 in 71 constituencies in 9 states, Phase 5 in 51 constituencies in 7 states, Phase 6 in 59 constituencies in 7states and Phase 7 in 59 constituencies in 8 states.”
