With nearly 7 lakh Indians working in Qatar, mostly in the construction sector, rumours are floating around saying that their safety has been compromised in the wake of the GCC’s decision to impose economic and political blockade on the Emirate for supporting Islamist extremist groups, including al-Qaeda and the Muslim Brotherhood.

Reacting to these rumours, a worried Indian embassy in Doha has issued an advisory, saying the Indian citizens there were safe. The advisory states: “The Embassy of India is monitoring the situation closely and is in touch with the Qatari authorities to ensure the safety and security of Indian nationals in Qatar.”

The embassy advised all Indians in Qatar to cross check all comments they hear. The embassy said that Indian workers need not worry about political developments, says a Gulf News report.

The embassy clearly states that “there is nothing happening that suggests any threat to physical security. Please update yourself of the latest news and do not believe rumours,” it said.
