INX Media: Supreme Court grants Bail to P Chidambaram in ED’s case

The Supreme Court today granted bail to former Union Minister P Chidambaram in the INX Media money laundering scam being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate.

A bench of Justices R Banumathi, AS Bopanna, and Hrishikesh Roy found it a fit case to grant bail to the former Union Minister.

He will be released after 105 days in custody. The bench fixed a 2 lakh bond with two sureties each as terms of the bail. The bench had reserved judgement on November 28.

Justice Bopanna, convinced with Senior Advocates Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Manu Singhvi’s arguments on an earlier date, said, “Gravity of an offence required to be kept in mind. Gravity of an offence to be gathered from the facts and circumstances of each case.”

The court has directed Chidambaram to co-operate with the investigation and to not make any statements to the press. Further, the court has prohibited him from overseas travel.

Chidambaram was arrested by the CBI on August 21, and later sent to Tihar Jail when police custody ended and the special CBI Court sent him to judicial custody.
