Jamia shooter to be produced before Juvenile Justice Board today

The Delhi Police Crime Branch on Friday will produce the Jamia firing accused before Juvenile Justice Board later in the day.

A police source said the Jamia shooter doesn’t regret his act and has so far denied being affiliated to any organisation.

He was radicalised after watching videos on social media and wanted to take revenge of the death of Chandan Gupta, killed during the Kasganj violence in 2018, reported news agency ANI.

The man in his teens opened fire at people protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act near the Jamia Millia Islamia university in Delhi on Thursday afternoon, causing chaos and panic in the area.

The accused, identified as Gopal was taken into custody after the firing.

He had allegedly shouted “kisko chahiye aazadi” (who wants azadi) before opening fire.

“Kisko chahiye azadi? Main dunga azadi [Who wants freedom? I will give freedom],” he reportedly said.

“Jamia firing incident a direct result of provocative statements made by BJP leaders during campaigning in Delhi,” said CPI’s D Raja referring to Anurag Thakur’s ‘Goli maaro s**lon ko comment‘.

The student who was shot at was identified as Shadab, was immediately taken to Jai Prakash Narayan Trauma Centre of AIIMS. He was discharged in the morning today after a surgery.
