Justice Nikhil Kariel transfer: GHCAA decides to call off strike from Wednesday

The indefinite strike started by the Gujarat High Court Advocates’ Association (GHCAA) on November 17 against the proposed transfer of Justice Nikhil S. Kariel to Patna High Court, would be called off from Wednesday, a senior Bar member confirmed on Tuesday.

Talking to a leading legal website, GHCAA Secretary and Advocate Hardik Brahmbhatt said that the decision was taken during the general body meeting today.

He added that the representatives of GHCAA will meet Gujarat High Court Chief Justice Aravind Kumar today, to inform him about the development.

On Monday, a seven-member delegation of GHCAA had met Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud for a half-an-hour session in his chambers in the presence of two senior judges of the top court, who are also members of the Collegium – Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice Mukesh R. Shah.

After meeting the CJI, the delegation had said that a detailed representation was made and the anguish and objections of the Bar against the transfer of Justice Nikhil Kariel were conveyed to the CJI.

The CJI assured the delegation that the Supreme Court Collegium would examine the objections raised by the Bar against the proposed transfer of Justice Nikhil Kariel.

The Telangana High Court Advocates Association, which had also staged a similar strike in protest against the proposed transfer of Justice A. Abhishek Reddy to the Patna High Court, had also called off their strike after meeting the CJI.
