Justice RD Dhanuka to take oath as Chief Justice of Bombay High Court on May 28

Justice R.D. Dhanuka, currently serving as a judge of the Bombay High Court, will take oath as Chief Justice of the same High Court on May 28.

The newly-appointed Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court will have a tenure of only three days as he is set to retire on May 30.

Earlier on Friday, the Union of India had notified the appointment of Justice R.D. Dhanuka as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.

Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal made the announcement on his Twitter handle, saying that in exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, the President of India, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, was pleased to appoint Justice R.D. Dhanuka, judge of Bombay High Court, as the Chief Justice of that High Court.

Justice Dhanuka is due to demit office on May 30. He will have a tenure of only four days as the Chief Justice.

On April 19, 2023, the Supreme Court Collegium, comprising Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice K.M. Joseph, had made the recommendation for appointment of Justice Dhanuka as Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.

Born in 1961, Justice Dhanuka completed his schooling in Mumbai. After finishing LLB, he  started his practice in the High Court in 1985 in the chamber of his father, retired Justice DR Dhanuka, till he was elevated as judge in 1990.

Justice Dhanuka was on the senior counsel panel of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai for the past several years and appeared in a large number of matters.

He was elevated as a judge of the Bombay High Court on January 23, 2012.

The Bombay High Court is presently functioning at a strength of 65 judges, 42 permanent and 23 additional judges.
