Former Supreme Court Judge, Justice Rohinton Nariman to deliver 7th Chief Justice MC Chagla Memorial Lecture

Former Judge at the Supreme Court, Justice Rohinton Nariman, will deliver the Seventh Chief Justice MC Chagla Memorial Lecture on Friday.

Organised by the Mumbai University Department of Law in collaboration with the Chief Justice MC Chagla Memorial Trust, the event will be held at the Convocation Hall of Mumbai University on January 27 at 6 pm..

The subject of justice nariman’s lecture is, ‘A tale of two Constitutions- India and the United States: the long and short of it all’.

The welcome address will be given by Dr Swati D. Rautela, Head – Department of Law.

Senior Advocate Iqbal Chagla and Dr. Rashmi M, Oza (Chair Professor – Justice Chagla Chair) will also speak on the occasion.

Professor Dr Rajeshri N Varhadi will deliver the Vote of Thanks.

Mahommedali Currim Chagla became the first permanent Chief Justice of Bombay High Court after India got Independence in 1947. He was born on September 30, 1900 in a well-known merchant family of Bombay. 

Justice Chagla pursued his education from St. Xavier’s High School and College in Bombay, after which he went on to study Modern History at Lincoln College, Oxford. The eminent jurist completed his graduation and post-graduation from Lincoln College.

In 1922, he was admitted to the Bar of the Bombay High Court, where he worked with illuminaries such as Sir Jamshedji Kanga and Mohammed Ali Jinnah.

In 1927, he was appointed as Professor of Constitutional Law at the Government Law College, Bombay. Justice Chagla soon became Honorary Secretary to the Bombay Bar Council. 

In 1941, Justice Chagla was elevated to the Bench of the Bombay High Court as Puisne Judge after the retirement of Justice B.J. Wadia. He retired as Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court on October 26, 1958.
