The Government of Karnataka has issued a notification extending working hours of workers employed in factories from May 22 to August 21, 2020.
The notification states that the working hours of workers employed in factoies registered under factories Act,1948 shall be subject to the following conditions:
- No adult worker shall be allowed or required to work in a factory for more than ten hours in any day and sixty hours in any week.
- Provisions of Section 59 regarding overtime wages shall continue to be applicable without any change.
The extension in working hours has been effected after exempting the provisions of Secrtion 51 and Section 54 of the factories Act, 1948.
Section 51 provides the weekly working hours which reads “No adult worker shall be required or allowed to work in a factory for more than forty-eight hours in any week.”
Section 54 provides the daily working hours which reads “Subject to the provisions of section 51, no adult worker shall be required or allowed to work in a factory for more than nine hours in any day.”
