Man who set himself on fire outside Supreme Court dies

The man had suffered 65 percent burns, while the woman suffered 85 percent burns. Both were admitted to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where the woman is currently undergoing treatment.

A 27-year-old man, who allegedly attempted suicide with a 24-year-old woman outside the Supreme Court on August 16, died on Saturday morning during treatment.

The man had suffered 65 percent burns, while the woman suffered 85 percent burns. Both were admitted to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where the woman is currently undergoing treatment.

According to police, the girl hails from Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh and was allegedly raped by Bahujan Samaj Party MP Atul Rai in 2019. In this case, the MP is in judicial custody for two years.

Before attempting suicide, the woman, along with her colleague, had recorded a video on Facebook Live, revealing her identity and alleging that she had filed a rape case against Rai in 2019. She alleged that some senior police officers and others were supporting the accused.

In the Live video, the woman claimed that a local court in Uttar Pradesh had issued a non-bailable warrant against her. In March, she said she had filed an application in the Supreme Court requesting to transfer the trial of the rape case from Prayagraj to a Delhi court, citing threat to her life.

Later in August, a local court in Varanasi issued a non-bailable warrant against the woman based on a forgery complaint lodged by the accused MP’s brother.

New Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police Deepak Yadav had said that the investigation was on to find out the exact reason behind the incident, but it was suspected that the girl committed suicide, fearing that the accused party would implicate them in the fraud case.

The DCP said the police personnel present on the spot immediately put blankets on both of them and doused the fire. They were rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where the man died today.
