President Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday said the National Law University would establish a new dimension in the field of law in the country. The world’s best education system should be adopted here, so that the coming generation can get quality law education and establish a new dimension in the field of justice.
Laying the foundation stone of the Uttar Pradesh National Law University and Advocates Chamber in a grand ceremony, held in Allahabad High Court, Prayagraj, the President said special emphasis should be laid on the participation of women in the judicial sector. The varsity should focus on employing equal number of female teachers, at par with their male counterparts and should also ensure to have 50 percent girl students in the university, he added.
“It was a great pleasure to lay the foundation stone of the National Law University and Advocates Chamber. Allahabad High Court was the fourth High Court established in the country and presently is the largest court in terms of number of judges. Such has been the tradition of this High Court that articulate stalwarts like Madan Mohan Malviya, Motilal Nehru, Sir Tej bahadur Sapru, Rajarshi Purushottam Das Tandon and Kailashnath Katju wrote glorious chapters of India’s history from this complex,”

Mr Kovind said women have the natural quality of delivering justice. They have the ability to give justice to all. Establishment of a just society will be possible only when the participation of women increases. Today, the number of women judges in the jurisdiction of judiciary is less than 12 percent. The number of women has to increase. It is expected that the number of women in this High Court will increase as advocates, officers and judges.
Generally, people are hesitant to seek help from the judiciary. Justice should be rendered to all. Decisions should be made in a language that is understandable to all. Cornelia Sorabji was the first woman judge of India, appointed in the Allahabad High Court in 1921. This was a forward-looking decision in the direction of women empowerment, he added.
Justice should be given to women and downtrodden. It is the fundamental right of all citizens to have justice in their hands. Taking note of the recent appointment of three women judges to the Supreme Court, the President said it was historical.

Mr Kovind stressed on instilling confidence among the common people in the judiciary. He said everyone will have to work for justice. Pending cases should be disposed of fast. This can be done by increasing the number of judges. Adequate resources should be made available to them. The High Court will proceed with the cooperation of the state government, he added.
Talking about Allahabad High Court, Mr Kovind said Prayagraj was chosen as the best place for Law University. He expressed his gratitude to Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court M.N. Bhandari and his team for providing the land.
“The world class law system in Uttar Pradesh National Law University is one in our nation and society. Students take part in law courses only after class 12th. Make a career in the field of law from the school level itself. Quality education should be provided in all institutions of legal education. Once the system is created, the process of improvement becomes complicated,” concluded the President.
