PIL filed in SC seeking arrest of Sri Lankan naval personnel for killing 4 Indian fishermen

A Public Interest Litigation has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking arrest of Sri Lankan naval personnel who allegedly killed 4 Indian fishermen on January 18 this year.

The PIL has been filed by Kadalsar Makkal Nala Sangamam Rep.by. Secretary Niklas alleging that 4 Indian Fishermen had been murdered by Sri Lankan naval personnel on January 18, 2021.

The petitioner has submitted that the 4 fishermen had set out for fishing from Pudukkottai district on January 18 and did not return, a search operation was undertaken by Indian Coast Guard, a naval ship and helicopter on his direction and received information through fishermen that the four (missing) fishermen died due to attack by Sri Lankan Navy.

The petitioner has further contended that for the past 30 years, civil war is going on between the Tamilians and Sri Lankan Government. Whereas, thousands of innocent Tamil people have been murdered and brutally killed.

The petitioner has sought direction to the Sri Lankan Government to provide compensation of Rs 5 crore each to the families of the 4 murdered Indian Fishermen and further take steps to protect the Tamil Nadu Fishermen and their properties from Sri Lankan Navy and avoid such incidents in future.
