A PIL has been filed in the Calcutta High Court on the protection of women travelling in all-women compartments in local trains. The plea has sought deployment of women railway police personnel in all local trains in West Bengal as well as the installation of CCTV cameras at the entrances and exits of womens’ compartments.
The PIL, filed by one Mousomee Shome in person, referred to incidents which took place in the all-women compartments.
During the hearing of the PIL on Thursday, the Eastern Railway counsel produced the communication dated 24.11.2021 sent by the Senior Divisional Security Commissioner (Coordination)/RPF, Eastern Railway/Howrah disclosing the steps taken in this direction.
The Division Bench of Chief Justice Prakash Shrivastava and Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj directed the Counsel for the Eastern Railway to hand over a copy thereof to counsel for the petitioner and “it will be open to the counsel for the petitioner to point out by filing the appropriate material to show if all such steps have been taken on the spot,” said the Court.
The Bench further directed the Counsel for the petitioner to furnish a copy of the petition along with enclosures to counsel for the State.
