A plea has been filed in the Supreme Court praying that the state must not lodge any FIR and make no arrest against any devotee who goes to the Yamuna river for Chhath Puja.
The plea seeks a direction to the Delhi Disaster Management Authority to permit the performing of Chhath Puja on the banks of the Yamuna and an FIR may also not be lodged against common public for usage or selling of firecrackers during the Chhath festival.
The petition, which has been filed by Sanjeev Newar and Swati Goel Sharma through Advocate Shashank Shekhar Jha, further prayed the state authorities must immediately tackle the water crisis in Delhi due to rising ammonia levels in the Yamuna river.
According to the petition, Delhi Police treated Diwali revellers as criminals for buying a polybag full of firecrackers. The petitioners claimed that a committee of eminent environmentalist may also be set up for the revival of the river.
It is pertinent to note that the DDMA had issued a detailed order specifying guidelines for the festival wherein it had mentioned that no celebrations would be allowed on the Yamuna banks.
