PM Narendra Modi extols CJI DY Chandrachud for attempt to make Supreme Court judgments available in regional languages

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appreciated the  Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud for his statement about attempting to make its judgments available in all Indian languages. 

Appreciating the work idea ,the Prime Minister said that if the idea is implemented,it  will help people, especially youngsters. 

The PM has tweeted that in a recent function, the Hon’ble CJI Justice DY Chandrachud spoke of the need to work towards making SC judgments available in regional languages. 

The tweet adds that CJI also  suggested the use of technology for it. This is a laudatory thought, which will help many people, particularly youngsters.

On Saturday, the CJI Chandrachud during a felicitation function said that the next step for the Indian judiciary was an increasingly digitised world would be to make Supreme Court judgments available in all Indian languages, possibly with the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools.

The CJI was speaking at an event organised by the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa to felicitate him.

CJI shared that he met with a professor of Madras who works in AI and the next step is to have translated copies of Supreme Court judgments in every Indian language.

To uncomplicate the judgments in English into another language can be a boon for the rural litigant who does not understand the tenor or niceties of English.

The CJI said that till the time ,judiciary does not reach out to citizens in a language that they can understand, in a manner they can comprehend, the work which we do will not reach 99 percent of our population.

While tweeting,the Prime Minister,on Sunday also said that the Central government is also making efforts to encourage Indian languages.

In his tweet,the PM has mentioned that India has several languages, which add to our cultural vibrancy. The Central Government is undertaking numerous efforts to encourage Indian languages including giving the option of studying subjects like engineering and medicine in one’s bhasha.
