Police Travels to Chennai to Arrest Justice Karnan

A police team from Kolkata reached Chennai on May 10 to arrest Justice CS Karnan on contempt charges, as ordered by the Supreme Court on May 9. The judge has been sentenced to six months in jail. The case comes under the jurisdiction of Kolkata Police as Justice Karnan is currently a judge of Calcutta High Court.

The judge had left Kolkata for a personal reason – he has been divested of all official duty – and news agencies have said that he was not even in Tamil Nadu at this point of time. He was in Srikalahasthi in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh. The police team will have to wait in Chennai till evening to effect the arrest, because that is when the judge is expected to return to the Tamil Nadu capital.

Karnan’s original place of work was the Madras High Court, from where he was transferred to the Calcutta High Court. The judge had arrived in Chennai before the Supreme Court’s verdict.
