President Droupadi Murmu awarded the Doctor of Laws (LL D) Post-Doctoral Degree in Environment Compensation to Dr Justice KJ Thaker, the Chairperson of the Gujarat State Human Rights Commission (GSHRC), at the National Forensic Sciences University’s 3rd convocation in Gandhinagar on Friday.
Dr Thaker, who already holds a PhD in Environmental Law from Gujarat University, retired as a judge of the Allahabad High Court in September 2023 before becoming the Chairperson, GSHRC. He joined the Bar in 1987 and was directly appointed District Judge in 1997. In 2013, he was appointed as an additional judge of the Gujarat High Court and was transferred three years later to the Allahabad High Court.
Dr Thaker has also been a teacher of law with stints as part-time lecturer at LA Shah Law College and MN Shah Law College, both in Ahmedabad. He also taught LL M at LA Shah Law College.
He has been a resource fellow with the Gujarat State Judicial Academy as well as the National Judicial Academy, Bhopal. A trained mediator, Dr Thaker mediated in several important litigations and has trained Judicial Officers in mediation. He has also conducted several Lok Adalats as Chairman of the Legal Services Authority for the Districts.
Dr Thaker has published several articles in various journals of repute on different subjects.
