A gem of a suggestion from Professor Upendra Baxi, the giant of legal erudition in India, has impressed Justice Arjan Kumar Sikri of the Supreme Court. Talking during a hearing on Tuesday (August 21), Justice Sikri mentioned his meeting with Professor Baxi at a function recently.
The judge told the court that while talking about gender neutrality Prof. Baxi came up with the idea of addressing people not as ladies and gentleman but as gentle persons.
He said he had also memorised his work in human rights.
Even if addressing people as such do not become the norm, it was interesting that fresh ideas are constantly seeping into the top echelon of Indian judiciary and the judiciary has been pretty accommodating too.
