RBI issues new Rs 500 notes, old tender to stay valid

In a move that will confuse many, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has introduced a new set of Rs 500 currency notes. The difference is that this new series will have the letter ‘A’ printed on it.

Why this new note, or what is the significance of this letter A, was not immediately known. The RBI has not issued an immediate clarification.

The RBI has, however, assured all that the old Rs 500 notes—as issued post demonetization—would all remain valid tender.

These currency notes will also be in the Mahatma Gandhi series, as per reports.
