The Supreme Court today eased the deadline for the sale of BS4 vehicles in India. Originally the deadline for the sale of these vehicles was 31st March which has now been extended by 10 days after the lockdown ends ie., they can sell their stock till 24th April 2020.
The Supreme Court passed the order after taking into consideration the fact that dealerships are facing a tough time clearing their BS4 vehicle stock due to the lockdown.
The court in its ruling said that only 10% of the unsold BS4 vehicle stock can be sold witjin 10 days after the lockdown ends. The ruling also stated that no such vehicle shall be sold in Delhi NCR region and the vehicles that are sold shall be registered within the 10 days of the sale.
The Federation of Automobile Dealers Association and Society of Automobile Manufacturers had moved the court for extending the deadline for the sale of BS4 vehicles. The Federation of Automobile Dealers Association had stated that 15000 passenger cars, 12000 commercial vehicles and 2 lakh two wheelers are at stake due to first slowdown in the industry.
Across India dealers are facing a tough situation as BS4 inventory worth Rs 6,400 crore is still lying unsold due to the impact of COVID-19 states and cities under lockdown. According to them 12,000 dealer outlets are currently shut in the lockdown states and cities. FADA also says that many of its members have voluntarily shut their outlets even in areas where there is no mandatory lockdown as a safety measure.
