ASG Rupinder Singh Suri passes away, CJI Ramana condoles demise

Rupinder Singh Suri, Senior Advocate and Additional Solicitor General (ASG), passed away on Monday in New Delhi.

Suri was appointed as ASG in June 2020 and had also served as the president of the Supreme Court Bar Association and the Supreme Court Advocates on Record Association. He also served as the standing counsel for Punjab in the Supreme Court for about 15 years.

Suri, who had founded Suri & Company, a law firm, in 1984, had begun his practice in 1976 when he joined the Bar. He also held the position of Secretary General, INSOL India and is an active member of International Bar Association.

Suri was appointed as the national representative of India from 2019, for the UIA (International Association of Lawyers).

He is survived by wife Gurvinder Suri and daughters Suruchi and Simar, both advocates.

Condoling his sudden demise, CJI N.V. Ramana called it an unfortunate incident. At the beginning of proceedings on Monday, the CJI conveyed his deep condolences and that of the judges of the Apex Court to the family of Rupinder Singh Suri.

Pradeep Rai, the Vice President of Supreme Court Bar Association, has expressed his condolences on ASG Justice Rupinder Singh Suri’s sudden demise on Monday. He is no more with us but only memories are left. He had associated with the legal profession for a long time. He was a leading name of BAR, the SCBA Vice President said.

Pradeep Rai has a very close relationship with Rupinder Singh and the two advocates had shared the stage on many occasions. He had expressed his views many times by appearing in APN’s popular TV show INDIA LEGAL.

Suri also also participated in a special meeting organized for lawyers and made the program memorable. He was immensely popular among lawyers because of his warm and intimate personality. Suri had been in the legal profession for more than four decades, Rai said.
