SC extends medical admission deadline to June 12

The Supreme Court on June 7 extended the deadline for admissions to medical courses at Aligarh Muslim University, Banaras Hindu University and to government colleges till June 12.

The decision by the bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan and Deepak Gupta sets aside a high court ruling, reacting to the plea by Ashish Ranjan. The appeal had wanted the court to monitor the time frame for conducting the counselling and admission process of medical courses.

The hearing for the case had been completed on June 6 and today (June 7) was set for the judgement.

At the last hearing, ASG Maninder Singh had contested that since all admissions were over and classes had started, the high court judgement need not be stayed. The Supreme Court has not held that argument valid.

In the judgement the court observed: “In peculiar circumstances, time is extended till June 12 for AMU-BHU and government colleges to take admissions.”
