SC fines states for not setting up Juvenile Justice Boards

The Juvenile Justice Board and Child Welfare Committee offices do not have computers, peripherals or internet connection, because of administrative lapses and the Supreme Court on Tuesday (July 11) ordered that this must be done urgently. It also fined states for not adhering to timelines.

The very essence of the implementation of the Juvenile Justice Act, 2000, depends on these, the bench of Justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta observed.

In the last hearing, the court directed the counsel for the Union of India to take instructions on the feasibility of urgently providing computers and internet connectivity to the Juvenile Justice Boards and Child Welfare Committee.

Some states complied by depositing the cost of Rs 50,000 to the court for not constituting the committee or appointing chairman and member of the committee.

Today the court again imposed cost on several states who did not appoint the members for the committee. Cost was imposed on states like Telangana, Tripura, Assam, etc.
