Senior Indian Police Officer SN Shrivastava has been appointed as the new chief of Delhi Police by the Centre on Friday.
The move comes days after Shrivastava was made Special Commissioner (Law and Order) by the Home Ministry after bringing him from the Centre Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to end the communal violence that broke out in the national capital over the controversial citizenship law.
Shrivastava, a 1985-batch officer of the Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory cadre, will be replacing Amulya Patnaik, whose tenure was extended by a month and is due to retire tomorrow.
The Ministry of Home Affairs, headed by Amit Shah and the Delhi Police faced severe criticism for its failure to contain the violence in Delhi.
Srivastava has earlier served as Special DG Jammu and Kashmir Zone of CRPF. He also had headed the elite Special Cell of Delhi Police.
