The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the elevation of five additional judges of the Allahabad High Court as permanent judges.
In its resolution on March 12, 2024, the Collegium recommended the names of five additional judges for appointment as permanent judges of the High Court. These are Justice Saurabh Srivastava, Justice Om Prakash Shukla, Justice Mohd. Azhar Husain Idrisi, Justice Jyotsna Sharma and Justice Surendra Singh-I.
All five judges were initially recommended for appointment as permanent judges by the High Court Collegium in May last year. After the proposal was accepted by the Chief Minister and Governor of Uttar Pradesh, these names were forwarded to the Supreme Court Collegium for its consideration.
However, the Supreme Court Collegium decided to defer its decision on the matter in September 2023.
Three months later, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud called for recent judgments delivered by the recommended judges, which were assessed by a committee of two judges. This committee opined that the judgments perused were of good quality.
In view of this report, the Collegium today decided to recommend all five judges for appointment as permanent judges of the Allahabad High Court.
