The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the appointment of Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur as the Chief Justice of Manipur High Court.
The parent court of Justice Thakur is the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court, however, he has been a judge of the Bombay High Court since June 10, 2022.
The resolution of the Collegium states that the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court had no representation amongst Chief Justices of High Courts since the superannuation of Justice AM Magrey.
The Collegium said that it has been for a very long period since a judge from Jammu & Kashmir origin has been elevated to the position of Chief Justice of a High Court or as a Judge of the Supreme Court.
It was after the due consultation with consultee-judges, that the collegium reached the decision of selecting Justice Thakur.
The Collegium report stated that considering all the factors Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur was found fit and suitable in all respects for being appointed as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Manipur.
The post had become vacant on the elevation of Justice PV Sanjay Kumar to the Supreme Court.
Justice Thakur enrolled as an advocate in October 1989 with the Bar Council of Delhi, and later with the Bar Council of Jammu & Kashmir.
Justice Thakur was designated as a Senior Advocate in 2011 and was appointed as a permanent judge of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir in 2013. He was then transferred to the Bombay High Court in June 2022.
Justice Thakur is the brother of former Chief Justice of India Justice TS Thakur.
